Nirvana By Brandon Sharp This is a collection of all nirvana guitar tabs and lyrics off of their six main albums. It does not include any rare songs, with the exception of "Even in His Youth" (the song list can be found below). I cannot gaurantee that they are all 100% correct and a couple aren't here or aren't totally complete. If you have any additions or corrections, mail them to me at bransharp@xoommail.com or brandonsharp@hotmail.com or bsharp@coastalnet.com or you can send me an IM on AOL (my screen name is bdsis1). Jason for the Milk It intro and tabs for Plateau, Oh, Me, Lake of Fire, and Where Did You Sleep Last Night? Notes on Feedback ----------------- First of all, thank you Jason for getting me started on feedback or else i wouldn't know a thing about it. OK, for those of you who don't know what feedback is, then you are totally lost. It is that ringing sound that usually can't be controlled but soundspretty cool when you get it. Here I have a few tips on how to make feedback. For all of these (unless stated otherwise) turn your distortion up as high as possible, you're volume doesn't necessarily have to be high, but it's better if it is, and turn your pickup switch (i beleive thats what its called, it's the little switch on the guitar near the tone and volume knobs) all the way down and make sure both tone knobs are all the way up (at ten). 1.The easiest way to get feedback is to just take your hands off the strings and getting really really close to the amp (make sure the guitar is level with the amp). When you get close enough you will get a high pitched ring (like the one at the end of the In Utero version of Heart-Shaped Box). Don't even try controlling the pitch or sound of this, you get what you get, if that makes sense. 2.Harmonics. Simply touch the strings instead of holding them down and you will get the same note but about 4 or 5 octavees higher. If done correctly they can turn into feedback. You can't get harmonics in every fret, but on some guitars you can get them over the pickups. Something kind of like harmonics is the pick scrape. This is used in songs like Smells Like Teen Spirit. Just pick your fingers up but leave them in the same chord shape and play the strings kind of like harmonics. Thats the best I can describe it. One other thing. Chimes are also kind of like harmonics, in a sense they are the same thing. Only difference is that chimes are over the bars BETWEEN the frets. You can get them over almost every bar on every string, but you get them best on the bars AFTER the 4th 12th and 15th frets. I don't think this technique is used in any Nirvana songs but i might as well include it. 3.Bends. Yesterday i was playing and the weirdest thing happened. I bent the 4th string (i think) in the 15th fret and it suddenly turned to screeching feedback. I tried it again and again and it didn't work (which proves that feedback is unpredictabke and uncontrollable). If you turn your first tone button all the way down to 1 and put the pickup switch all the way at the top and get really close to the amp and bend either the low E or A strings in a high fret over and over withut letting go, you should get really great, deep feedback that will shake your floors and knock the pictures off your walls. A similar effect can be acheived but doesn't sound as good if you don't get close to the amp. This technique is used at the end of Aneurysm (only one, short time at the end) and a little in radio friendly unit shifter and possibly a few others I forgot to mention. 4.For lazy people. When you're playing, simply let go of your strings. The vibrations will cause feedback. This can be witnessed in songs that stop suddenly like Spank Thru. Another good way to vibrate them is to bang on the back of the neck, around the first or second fret. Kurt does this at the begginning of breed and school, it produces a low rumbling sound but usually ends in screeching feedback. Also you can take your guitar off and rest the back of the neck on the front of the amp. When you sit it down, the impact will cause the strings to vibrate one at a time, so you can just sit there and stop each string and let another one produce a different pitch over and over again. 5.3 tools i can think of:the slider, wammy bar (wah wah, twang, tremelo bar, etc...) and the phone (I'll explain later). I am pretty sure that this isn't the correct way to use a slider but you can get cool effects (not always feedback) by just sliding it up and down the strings and even over the pickups. I read in an interview with Kurt where he said how much he hated wammy bars. I agree. They detune your strings and make you hafta retune, but if you get feedback you can use it to loosen the strings and change the pitch. The same sound can be achieved by gently bending the neck (just don't snap it over your knee or anything). The phone. Chordless phones work best. Put the part of teh receiver that you hear out of close to the third pickup (if you have 3) and you can hear whatever you would normally hear on the phone (sort of a speakerphone) but if you put it to close you will get very loud feedback. You can also use the bottom of the phone as a slider. I am not a professional at this and I know I forgot something and i know there's plenty I havent heard about so mail me anything else!
